Sri Lanka's Two Monsoons: Where to Go in Every Month

How Sri Lanka's south-west and north-east monsoons mean there's almost always a dry coast somewhere — with a month-by-month guide to the south, west, east, north and hill country.

Short answer

Sri Lanka gets two monsoons: the south-west (Yala) monsoon from about May to September, which brings rain to the south and west coasts and hill country, and the north-east (Maha) monsoon from about October to January, affecting the north and east. So the south and west are best from December to April, the east coast from about April to September. Inter-monsoon periods (March–April, October–November) can bring storms anywhere.

Key points

  • South and west coasts — December to April.
  • East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) — about April to September.
  • Hill country is pleasant much of the year but wettest in the south-west monsoon.
  • Inter-monsoon months can be stormy island-wide.

Sri Lanka's small size and two monsoon systems mean that in almost any month, somewhere on the island has good weather. The trick is knowing where.

The two monsoons

Monsoon Approx. months Affects
South-west (Yala) May–September South and west coasts, hill country
North-east (Maha) October–January North and east coasts, Cultural Triangle
Inter-monsoon March–April, October–November Thunderstorms anywhere

Hill country

Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are cooler and pleasant much of the year, wettest during the south-west monsoon. Early mornings are often clearest for views and hikes.

Planning tips

  • Combine the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa) with whichever coast is dry.
  • The scenic train from Kandy to Ella is popular — reserve seats early.
  • Ocean conditions change with the monsoon; swim only where locals do and lifeguards are present.

The bottom line

In Sri Lanka, follow the dry coast: south and west in winter, east in summer. More on monsoons across the region: Monsoon season.
